September 6th task

For Task One I am thinking about writing about what becoming a single mom has taught me and what it has given me. I have a hard time seperating things into different paragraphs. I can talk forever about something but to organize it into different groups is a struggle for me. When I start to it doesnt take long for me to head in another direction. I guess the only question I have for it at the moment is if you have any suggestions on how to organize paragraphs as they are supposed to be.

  1. Hi Courtney,

You have identified a great focus for this first paper. In your paper, as a reader, I might expect you to discuss briefly about your divorce. If your focus is what becoming a single mom has taught you and what it has given you, a reader might be curious as to why a marriage did not work out.

Right now, my only advice would be is to begin writing. Don't worry about paragraphing. We will get to that in due time. Freewriting may not be part of your process, but it helps. The more you can allow yourself the time to write, the more you generate and the easier it will be to identify a focus (or where your story begins). Allow yourself maybe a half hour each day to write. See what becomes of it. When the drafting stage begins, what we will focus on is developing paragraphs. I always tell students -- 1 paragraph = 1 main idea. In your paper, you may organize it as such:

    1) Introduction (where you state your thesis: becoming a single mom and what it has taught you and what it has given you)
    2) your divorce (why the marriage did not work out for you)
    3) becoming a single parent
    4) what has it taught you
    5) what it has given you
    6) conclusion (where you may restate your thesis in other words)

Think of the numbers as separate paragraphs.
